Are you finding difficulty in choosing the right path for your career? You have an equal interest in hardware and software but not able to decide which field has a leading scope and a better future. Being a student you are not sure about the stream you will be able to work better in. Interestingly, these two streams have rewarding careers with a bit variation in their skill set. In fact, they both appeal equally to the students. Isn't that? But there exists a difference between CSE and IT which we are going to cover in our next sections.
Generally, most of the students are confused while choosing a stream for their higher studies. This might be a result of a lack of practical knowledge or understanding among the two different engineering streams. The two streams are somewhere complementary to each other with certain minute differences between them. The key difference between CSE and IT
is that IT focuses the application of computing technology to real life processes whereas CS develops the science that promotes these applications. In simple words, Computer Science is creating new software and hardware by using various programming skills and existing subsystems. Whereas, IT lay downs the hardware and network required to complete the development process. Based on this, you can conclude that:"Information Technology is a Subfield of Computer Science".
Information Technology(IT) is oriented upon installing, organizing and maintaining computer systems. It also includes dealing with operational networks and databases. While Computer science(CS) is all about designing and developing new software systems using efficient programming and complex data algorithms.
Opting for an IT career doesn’t necessarily require a computer science skills set but choosing CS career requires some basic and related knowledge about hardware and networks. IT professionals typically work in a business environment which involves installing internal networks and computer systems without doing any hardcore programming.
Whereas, Computer scientists work in a broader range of environments ranging from businesses to universities or maybe some video game design companies. Each of these engineering streams can lead to an excellent growth career providing you unlimited learning opportunities. Considering the salary aspect, software developers earn a high salary package in comparison to other profiles. With the fact that software developers are somewhat ahead of IT professionals in earnings, you should choose what you can do with dedication and passion.
Difference Between CSE and IT Based on Courses and Core Areas
Computer Science Engineering : Most of the engineering students while completing their four year CS degree have to learn about the design, implementation, and management of software and hardware processes. The various core subjects include Algorithms and Data Structure, Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, and Robotics, Database and Information Retrieval, Human-Computer Communication, Numerical and Symbolic Computation, Operating Systems, Programming Languages, and Software Methodology and Engineering. Graduates must try to learn and practice different coding languages on their own. Most CS graduates hardly know about one or two programming languages. So, students need to develop their interest in programming on their individual end if they really wish a career in development.
Information Technology : In a two or four year IT degree, students learn to deal with the installation, development, and implementation of computer systems and applications. The courses under this IT stream are almost similar to that of CS including Data Structures and Algorithms, Microprocessors and Interfacing, Computer Communication and Networking, Database Systems, Internet Technologies and Applications, Software Engineering, Information Security, Database Administration etc.
While IT and CS Degrees can Lead to Similar Jobs, the Differences are a bit Close to Each Other.
Computer Science Engineering: Job openings for Software professionals have occupied a large space in the corporate sector than in the public sector, referred to as PSU's. CS graduates can work as a junior programmer, database administrator, junior network manager, Data Analyst, Software Developer, Software Engineer, and Client-Server Systems Manager etc in their initial phase. Such job opportunities can be found in big private companies like IBM, Intel, HP, TCS, INFOSYS, WIPRO, TECH MAHINDRA,CTS and Dell in India and abroad.
Information Technology: Career options for IT graduates are also good and similar. IT Professionals can get jobs in a wide range of work sectors such as finance, arts, medicine, defense, and other areas. Opportunities for IT Specialists are also available in various IT firms all over India, some of the leading IT Companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Accenture, HCL Infotech, IBM, etc. recruit such professionals. If you have your interest in working at PSU's then you must apply for job opportunities in major public sector firms like BSNL, ISRO, CDIT, CDAC, etc.
Students who have successfully completed their bachelor degree programme in Computer Science or Information technology can opt for advanced studies or any higher specialization course in their related area. Engineering graduates may pursue Master degree in different areas like M.tech, M.E, MBA, MSc, M.Phil, or Ph.D. For this, they can choose a college in India or they can go abroad for completing their higher education. This will further polish their technical as well as administrative skills.
Keeping in mind about the difference between CSE and IT streams, you need to select a field. Don't start your selection with payscale, start it by your self-interest. Taking at a right decision in this initial phase will lead you to a blooming future ahead.
So, are you all set to learn and inspire tomorrow’s world? Do remember. Choosing a right career is not enough, taking determined steps is all just required. All the best, champs!
