Do you want to study any one of the streams of science? For undergraduate students, B.Sc. (or B.Sc General) Bachelor’s degree and B.Sc. Bachelor’s degree (Hons), are two perfect options for graduation who want to learn and lead their career in any science streams like Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics. Though there is no much difference Between Bsc and Bsc Hons, this article will help you in understanding the slight difference between them. So quickly let's look into the difference between two academic degrees.
Bachelor’s degree (gen) and B.Sc. Bachelor’s degree (Hons), are both academic degrees offered to the undergraduate students with a little difference in their course structure, qualification criteria, specializations offered and job scope. The students can understand each of them one by one.
A Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree is considered as a more standard and superior course in comparison to the Bachelor of Science degree. A Bachelor’s degree or BSc is generally classified as an ordinary pass degree or a regular BSc degree which completes in three to four years. Therefore this is also referred to as a general degree. While for completing a special degree, it may take up to four to five year. The most important point is that the student is not necessarily required to submit any dissertation in the case of BSc degree. But if the same is a special degree, the student has to hand over a dissertation to the management.
Some countries do not offer Bsc Hons course at all, while countries like Australia, Britain, Canada, India, and Sri Lanka award Bsc Hons degree to the students in colleges and universities. To qualify for BSc Hons degree, the dissertation is mandatory to submit. Countries like England and Wales allow students to complete their Bsc Hons in three years only.
In India, B.Sc (Hons) is basically a three-year degree program which develops advanced theoretical and research skills among undergraduate students. Students can either build an academic career in a particular subject or they can develop their professional skills also. It is an appropriate course for students who wish to pursue a Master of Science (M.Sc) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) after completing their graduate studies. Additionally, this program helps students in developing an independent research project in an area of interest under the supervision of an academic staff member.
B.Sc (general) or simply B.Sc is a three-year undergraduate academic degree for undergraduates to strengthen their foundational knowledge possible for a science-based career. This program also facilitates a large range of career possibilities in government and corporate sector. It provides a broad foundation in multiple science subjects along with a special focus on multi-disciplines.
For entering into a Bsc Hons, the student should have passed 10 +2 or an equivalent exam with 55 to 60% of aggregate marks. moreover, they should have studied physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology as the compulsory subjects in their academics. Whereas Bsc requires candidates who have passed class 12 with more than 55 % marks in best of four subjects.
There are no specializations offered under a Bsc degree. The course offers broad knowledge in all science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Life Sciences (Biology - Zoology & Botany), Computer Science, etc. While Bsc Hons offers the given list of streams to choose from:
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Biochemistry
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Biomedical Sciences
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Statistics
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Computer Science
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Botany
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics
➤ B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and others
Talking in the context of job opportunities, you can get more advantage in B.Sc (hons) degree in comparison to a B.Sc degree. By obvious reasons, a student with a B.Sc (hons) degree will be given preference over a student with a B.Sc (general) degree. Generally, a B.Sc holder can find jobs in business, academics, marketing, research, etc.
B.Sc (Gen) covers all the basic and foundational knowledge about science-based subjects. Hence it aims in providing the foundational learning in science and other multi-disciplines. On the other hand, B.Sc (Hons) is much more specialized as compared to the B.Sc (General) degree and thus helps the students in building an advanced and professional career.
So the students who want to learn the subjects in detail, are advised to go for a B.Sc (Hons) course. But for a balanced approach, pursue a B.Sc (General) course for undergraduate studies. Whatever be the bit difference Between Bsc and Bsc Hons, they both are popular and valued among students.
