Difference between MBA and PGDM

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) both are the management courses at Master’s level. Both the courses have a materialistic orientation and it’s difficult to differentiate between these two. The main aim of the courses is to equip somebody who wants to move up in the hierarchy and enter into the management field. Below, is the differences between PGDM and MBA:

1- Degree vs Diploma:

At the end of PGDM course, candidates are offered a Diploma. However, at the end of MBA programmes, applicants receive a degree.

2- Syllabus:

In most cases, MBA course curriculum is created by the university. The core syllabus (and sometimes even elective subjects) is much same in two MBA colleges under the same university.

However, PGDM courses are determined by individual institutions. This gives supreme flexibility to the course curriculum. Every year syllabus undergoes a change according to industrial requirements.

  1. Susceptible to Fraudulence:

Since PGDM courses are offered by autonomous bodies, learners need to be careful while taking admission. Many colleges and institutes make claims or do not have proper accreditation status. MBA degrees are conferred by numerous varsities, and hence there’s a lower chance of fraudulent claims.

4- Focus:

Both MBA and PGDM courses have customary core subjects. However, MBA courses focus more on theoretical and technical aspects of management rather than adopting a practical approach whereas PGDM courses have an industrial orientation and focus on skills based on market requirements.

  1. Cost Factor:

MBA courses have inferior tuition fees as compared to PGDM courses. This may be because most governments approved universities offer MBA degrees. In the case of PGDM degree, aspirants have to bear the cost of the entire programme. However, this is not an ironclad rule.
