In India, several 10th-grade aspirants opt for commerce course in their plus 12 or equivalent. Commerce stream is the study of trade and business activities such as the exchange of goods and services from producer to the ultimate consumer. What is Commerce?

There are numerous of Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses which can be pursued by the applicants after completing 12th from the recognized educational board. The Eligibility Criteria for both UG/PG Course is different from each other.

Importance of Commerce Course:-

Eligibility Criteria:-

For Undergraduate Course

Aspirants who want to apply for Commerce UG course must pass there 10+2 with minimum 45% of marks from a recognized educational board.

Some documents needed to do an undergraduate degree in commerce in India:
  • 10th and 12th marks card
  • Character certificate
  • Caste certificate
  • ID proof of parents/guardian
For Postgraduate Course

Candidates must possess 12th or graduation degree with minimum 50% of marks from university/college.

Some documents needed to do a postgraduate degree in commerce in India:
  • Any bachelors degree
  • Migration Certificate (if applicable)
  • Character certificate
  • Entrance exam marks sheets of CAT, XAT, MAT may be required
Admission Procedure:-

Numerous colleges offer admissions to the learners on the basis of merit for B.Com or BBA courses after 12th commerce. The merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in 12th or equivalent exam.

The undergraduate program in commerce is of three-year that comprises of six semesters. Scholars after completing 10+2 (from commerce stream) with at least 50% marks are eligible to opt for this course. Few Bachelor degree program is:

Masters of Commerce Course:

The postgraduate program in commerce is of four- years that comprises of four semesters. Scholars after completing their graduation with at least 50% marks are eligible to opt for this course. Few Masters degree program is:

Diploma Courses:-

Diploma Course duration generally lasts for 2 Years.

  • Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.)
  • Diploma in Education (DEd)

Chartered Accountancy (CA)

CA is the toughest exam to crack. Aspirants after completing their 12th dream of becoming a CA. Duration depends on candidates that how he is undergoing the training process and clear exams. The job of a C.A. is to see to the financial affairs of businesses and companies in accordance with the laws set by Government authorities. CA tasks include looking into tax affairs, seeking in financial transactions through auditing and creating necessary reports etc.

After becoming a C.A., one may take up positions related to the Finance department in Private as well as Government companies. After gaining experience he may also start working independently and also opens up a consultancy business.

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)

This is a course that is most opted by the aspirants after 12th and there are numerous reasons why this course is so popular. Initially, the level of academic difficulty associated with this course is not too high. That means it is relatively easy to go through B.Com. program and obtain a Degree. Another advantage is that it allows learners to venture into other fields also. After completing this course one may go for other job oriented courses such as M.B.A., Vocational courses, Skill oriented courses etc. Other than that, there are numerous lucrative career opportunities for B.Com. graduates in Private and Government sectors.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

Bachelor of Business Administration is a 3 years long degree course. After completion, candidates may also follow up with an M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration) Degree too. Jobs are available for BBA graduates in the government sector and private sector as well. Many MNCs recruit talented BBA. graduates to deal with management and finance related issues.

Bachelor of Economics (BE)

Bachelor of Economics (BE) is a four-year academic degree in social sciences which encompassing both qualitative and quantitative courses. Typical mandatory courses for the degree include microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic statistics, econometrics, history of economic and political economy.


Usually, only graduates are allowed to pursue L.L.B but with emerging of the new rule, it is possible for 12th Commerce scholars to pursue Law course from Law schools after schooling. But to do so, they will have to select an integrated Law course these integrated courses last for 5 years which are the combination of a Degree course and traditional L.L.B. course. For example- B.Com. and L.L.B./ B.A. and L.L.B. etc.

Company Secretary (CS) Course

Every company needs a Company Secretary so that his organization function properly and to become a C.S., one has to appear for Company Secretaryship course and clear the exams associated with the course. For the selection in CS course offered by ICSI, there is 3 stage program. The three programs are-

  • Foundation Program
  • Executive Program
  • Professional Program
Hospitality Diploma Courses

When it comes to Hospitality courses, the eligibility criteria is not very stern. Even 10th passed scholars may pursue Hospitality Diploma courses. But on the other side, such courses possess excellent value too.

Animation and Multimedia Courses:

Commerce stream applicants may go for an animation certificate/diploma/degree course if they are creative and have skills to create something new. There are ample job opportunities available in the animation field. Duration of the animation courses may last for 6 months to 3 years depending upon the nature of the course.

Journalism and Mass Communication Course:

When it comes to this field, Diploma, as well as Degree programs both are available for the interested applicants. The duration of these courses is in between 2 to 3 years. Talking about job opportunities, one may get jobs in both print as well as digital media.

Event Management Course:

Certificate, Diploma and Degree courses are available when it comes to Event Management course. The course duration varies between 1-3 years, depending upon the program.

Fashion Design and Technology Course:

Bachelor of Statistics

Actuarial Science:

Actuarial Science is a course that uses mathematics and statistics that determine the risk in sectors like insurance, finance and other relevant fields. The course consists of Four stages:  Core Application Stage, Specialist Technical Stage and Specialist Application stage.

Certified Management Accountant (CMA):

Certified Management Accountant course is similar to CA and CS course. CMA course has three levels-

  • Foundation
  • Intermediate
  • Final

12th standard passed learners may take the first step- Foundation level and start CMA course. Course duration depends on aptitude. Generally, this course can be accomplished within 2-3 years.
