Mass Communication Courses

Eligibility Criteria:

UG Courses:

Candidates should clear Class 12th with any stream from a recognised board with the minimum percentage of 50% as stipulated by a university/ college are eligible to take admission. Some universities/ colleges also require candidates to be minimum 17 years in age at the time of admissions (depending on the university norms)

PG Courses:

All applicants must hold a graduation degree in any stream from a renowned university with a minimum of 60% marks. The age of the candidates should be minimum 23 years or more in age at the time of admissions.   

Admission Procedure:

UG Courses:

To get admission in UG course of mass communication, the candidate has to visit the online website of respective university/college in which he wants to take admission. By filling up the Application form applicants can enrol themselves for the entrance examination. After clearing the entrance exam counselling and group discussion will be done as per the schedule of the college. On the basis of skills and abilities, scholars will be shortlisted for admission. Some universities/colleges also admit the aspirants directly on the basis of 12th marks.

PG Courses:

Admission criteria for PG courses is the same as in UG courses. The entrance exam is conducted for selecting the deserving aspirants. Some universities/ colleges also admit the candidates directly on the basis of bachelor’s marks.

Programs - School of Mass Communication

Bachelor's Degrees in Mass Communication (Duration: 3 Years)

The undergraduate program in mass communication is of three-year that comprises of six semesters. Scholars after completing 10+2 (from any stream) with at least 50% marks are eligible to opt for this course. For gaining admission to an undergraduate degree in Mass Communication from any University or Institute, a candidate should be 17 years of age at the time of admission. Few Bachelor degree program is:

1- Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC):

Bachelor of Journalism and  Mass Communication is a 3 -years undergraduate mass communication course. An interesting fact about BJMC course is that it enables the applicants to work in various media like print, radio, television, internet, and the list continues.

2- Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM):

BMM is an undergraduate course dealing with communication mediums used by the masses. The duration of the course is 3 years. The course includes the study of different channels of communication such as newspapers, television, radio, and internet.

3-Bachelor of Journalism (BJ):

Bachelor of Journalism is an undergraduate degree in the field of journalism and mass communication that candidates can pursue right after their Class 12. BJ is a three years duration course in which aspirants are taught about various aspects of the media industry like research, reporting, compiling, writing, editing as well as the presentation of information.

4- Bachelor of Mass Communication (BMC):

BMC is a 3 years full-time postgraduate course. This degree is awarded in Mass Communication with concentrations in journalism, Advertising, Sports Communication, Communication Studies, an International communication, and Public Relations.

Postgraduate Degrees in Mass Communication (Duration: 2 Years)

The duration of masters degree in mass communication is for two years. The course equips the student with not just one stream but with a holistic knowledge of all the different mediums in mass communication. Whether its print or audio-visual journalism or corporate communication or radio production, a student learns everything in it. The two-year master's course in Mass Communication is a blend of theory as well as practical subjects. Some Masters degree programs are:

1- Masters of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC):

MJMC is a 2-year postgraduate course study after BJMC. The course deals in journalism and mass media communication. The Degree Course trains the aspirants regarding writing, editing, photographing etc.

2- Master of Journalism (MJ):

Masters of journalism is a 2-year postgraduate mass communication course. MJ course is entirely based on live output and trains journalists across all three main areas of journalism - broadcasting, news and newspaper reporting as well as magazines and the internet.

3- Master of Mass Communication (MMC):

MMC course is usually related to the study of the newspaper, magazine publishing, radio, television, and film as these are used to disseminate news and for advertising. Masters of Mass communication s a 2-year post graduate course.

PG Diploma in Mass Communication (Duration: 1 Year)

Post Graduate in Mass Communication is of recent origin. It’s a diploma course which can be pursued by the aspirants after finishing his/her bachelor's education. Duration of PG Diploma is of 1 year. Several PG Diploma courses are:

1- PG Diploma in TV Journalism & Communication:

This course emphasis on Practical hands-on training which enables aspirants to join television news and entertainment channels, production houses, Bollywood/ TV serials, FM stations, etc. The duration of this course is 1-year

2- Diploma/PG Diploma in Photography:

Diploma in photography is a 1-year course which mainly deals with the study of photography. The courses is designed to make the students more proficient in the technical and practical aspects of photography.

3- Diploma/PG Diploma in Digital Journalism:

Duration of PG Diploma in Journalism is of 1-year. It is full-time Postgraduate Diploma course. In this course, candidates will learn journalism impacts such as private lives, public policy, and the context of the contemporary convergence of multimedia.

SHORT TERM COURSES (DURATION: 3 MONTHS)

Duration of short term courses under mass communication is of 3 months. Limited creative courses are there to opt by the aspirants under a short period of time. Some courses are:

1- Sound Recording & Radio Production:

It is a skill development programme. Seventy per cent of the syllabus is composed of practical exercises with a view to help students develop necessary skills as a sound recordist and sound designer for films, TV and media.

2- Still Photography:

The course of study in photography and journalism is a skill development programme with 70% practicals that prepares aspirants to enrolled there career in this course as a freelance photographer, journalist or photojournalist.

3- News Anchoring:

News anchoring course aims to give applicants the techniques used anchoring for live events & television shows with an added advantage of learning news reading complexities

4- Radio Jockey (RJ):

The course aims to expose its students to the techniques employed in radio jockeying shows with an added advantage of learning speaking complexities.

5- Public Relations:

Public relations is the process of presenting information to society in order to present a specific view of a product or organization. It is an eminent course which offers a lucrative job career to the applicants.

6- Photography:

Photography plays a vital role in the field of technology and mass communication by demonstrating facts or reinforcing ideas.

7- Audio-video Editing:

The course aims at training its scholars the foundations & the techniques used while editing audio-video (which includes Photoshop, Premiere Pro, FCP Final Cut Pro and audio editing).

8- Modeling for T.V Films, Theatre, Drama:

Starting salary for a mass communication professional could be between Rs 12,000 to 25,000 per month (approx). After 5 Years of work experience, a professional can expect a higher salary in the range of Rs 1 Lakhs to 2 Lakhs per month (approx).
