In this article, the full form of various competitive exams which are conducted at a large scale is given, the names of these examinations are GATE, NEET, CAT, GMAT, GRE, IELTS. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering)

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering and it is an examination conducted at an all-India level by highly respected bodies like IISC Bangalore (Indian Institute of Science) Bangalore, and seven Indian Institutes of Technology which represent the National coordinating board. If you clear the cut-off of this examination and get a good GATE score, then you can easily get admission into the coveted institutes like IITs, IISC, IIITs, and NITs.

Various other institutes like BARC, DRDO, ISRO, BHEL, TCIL, etc. also take the GATE score of the student into account for awarding fellowships, jobs, internships, or for admission to various courses offered by them.

Not only in the national institutes but a good score in GATE also helps in providing international opportunities in countries like Singapore and Germany, for admission in their prestigious universities.

The by-product of preparing for GATE is that it also helps you strengthen your concepts of B.Tech and it also helps you in the IES (Indian Engineering Services).

Eligibility Criteria for GATE

  • The GATE exam can be attended by students in the final year of their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Graduate in any stream related to science or engineering.
  • No age limit criteria
  • Master’s Degree in any subsidiary of Science/Statistics/ Maths/ Computer Applications.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is an examination that is structured in a way to test the ability of candidates to study a higher education course held in English. It generally provides an insight into the readiness of the candidate to move to a foreign country where the language spoken is English. In this exam, the English proficiency of a candidate s tested and it gives an indication of the overall ability of the candidate in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English. The exam is conducted in a dignified manner by British Council or IDP, and IELTS is recognized by immigration authorities, professional bodies, and other government agencies.

The score of IELTS is taken into account for admission to universities and also for employment purposes in various countries like Australia, the UK, the USA, Canada, and New Zealand. Comprising of four modules namely Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing, the exam is conducted over a duration of three hours. There are 2 distinct categories in which the exam is divided-

Category 1- 2 hours and 45 minutes for the Listening, Reading & Writing section.

Category 2- 15 minutes for the speaking section

The sections mentioned above in category 1 of the IELTS examinations are conducted in a continuous manner on the same day. Whereas, the speaking test can be scheduled anytime up to 7 days before or after the exam. This exam is considered relatively easy as there is no negative marking and students are granted the liberty of placing an attempt over all the questions.

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test)

NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and it is an entrance examination for medical aspirations and is conducted all over India. The test is a gateway for students who have dreams of making admission to any UG & PG (graduate/post-graduate) medical courses. The exam scores are accepted in government as well as private colleges of India. Conducted by CBSE ( Central Board of Secondary Education), it was introduced in 2013 and has taken place of all the separate entrance exams conducted individually by the states. Every year, on average, more than 140,000 students participate in the exams

NEET Eligibility Criteria

  • The basic eligibility that allows the candidate to participate in NEET is 50% marks in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
  • The age group of the candidate should be between 17 to 25.
  • Their upper age limit relaxation for SC/ST/OBC is 5 years.
  • There are 15% seats reserved for SC, 27% for non-creamy layer OBC, 7.5 % for ST, and 3% for physically handicapped.

CAT( Common Admission Test)

CAT stands for Common Admission Test which is a national-level entrance exam conducted to provide admission to students to MBA courses across several IIMs, IIFT, FMS, and other top management institutes of India. The seats reserved for admission are more than 5500 and in total, there are 20 IIMs such as IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, and many more.

The CAT exam comprises three sections namely Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation, and Logical Reasoning. The question is multiple-choice and has negative markings as well.

Eligibility Criteria for CAT

  • The candidate should have at least 60% in graduation.
  • No upper age limit
  • The minimum age limit for candidates is 18 years.
  • The exam can be taken only 5 times for a duration of 12 months with a gap of 16 days in minimum for having the eligibility to attend the exam next time.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)

The three-and-a-half-long computer-based test is and is conducted for admission to graduate management programs in foreign countries like France, Germany, the USA, the UK, etc. Integrated Reasoning (IR), Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), Quantitative Ability, and Verbal Ability are the four sections of the exam.

The test is highly adaptive as the testing software adjusts itself depending on the candidate's performance. The progress & accuracy of the candidate is directly proportional to the difficulty level of the questions in the exam. This method is proven to give an exact measure of the level of the candidate's performance in the exam. GRE (Graduate Record Examinations)

Administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS), this exam is one of the most sought-after exams those wish to study abroad.
