Let me first introduce a few types of Engineering Entrance Exam conducted in India. In an attempt to enroll in the most reputed engineering colleges of India, the IITs, students begin to prepare during the last years of their intermediate education itself. Many of them explore IIT JEE Coaching, to crack the entrance examination.
IIT JEE
For Admissions in IISc, NITs, IIITs, ISM, IITs, and other CFTIs of the country. Students find it much challenging to focus on their 12th exams while also preparing for their IIT JEE. The students need to manage their time to study for their 12th board and also prepare for IIT JEE. Preparation-based teaching methodologies in 10th and 12th standards, provide an opportunity to train and test prepare students for both the board and the competitive exams simultaneously. It is important to take initiative and learn for the exam, well before time.
Eligibility Criteria for IIT JEE:
The exam is conducted in two different stages:
JEE ADVANCED
This stage of the JEE contains Paper 1 & Paper 2, both spanning 3 hours each and conducted through an offline mode. Besides the above-mentioned institutes, IITs, IISc, and RGPIT grant admissions based on JEE advanced rankings. While, NITs and IIITs allow admissions to the students, who fail to qualify for JEE Advanced.
There are various other exams, opening ways to admission in thousands of engineering colleges spread across India. Gone are the times when IIT-JEE and AIEEE were few of the only exams that engineering aspirants used to prepare for. Let us take a look at some of the most popular engineering exams in India today.
BITSAT
BITSAT is an online admission exam conducted by The Birla Institute of Technology and Science. Those who pass the same are allowed admissions to engineering degree courses at BITS, across all 3 campuses at Pilani, Goa, & Hyderabad. The exam appears on the same lines and patterns as the IIT JEE, wherein lakhs of aspirants contest for around 2,000 seats in the different BE (Hons.) programs
During the course of the 3-hour online exam, the Institute also examines students on their English proficiency and Logical Reasoning, along with their aptitude in PCM. Applicants are granted 3 marks for every correct answer, while a negative marking of 1 mark, for every wrong answer.
VITEEE
It stands for the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination, carried by the Vellore Institute of Technology for admissions to its engineering courses. It has two campuses, Vellore and Chennai. The college offers nearly 5000 seats in its engineering courses.
The Institute carries a 2.5 hours online exam, which contains 40 questions each on Physics, Chemistry, Maths. In the latest edition of the exam, it started with the introduction of an English section, which constitutes only 5 questions. Thereby taking the total amount of questions to 125, which carry 1 mark each and no negative marking.
MU OET
This engineering entrance exam is conducted by Manipal University for admissions to the Manipal Institute of Technology & other affiliated institutes.
The university carries MU-OET for 2.5 hours, it covers the segments of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with 50, 50, and 70 questions respectively. An additional segment on English and General Aptitude comprises 30 questions. The selection process requires students to pass in the MU OET with a minimum of 50% marks and a good rank.
SRM JEE
This entrance examination is administered by the SRM University for admissions to the UG courses in Engineering, across its different colleges in Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Ramapuram Part 2 - Vadapalani, & NCR Ghaziabad. Every year near 1.7 lac students appear for SRM JEE and compete for just about 7000 places across these four campuses.
The exam includes 35 questions each on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with 3 marks for each right answer. 1 negative mark of one mark for each incorrect answer. The exam is carried both in online and offline modes, as per the necessities of the applicants.
Students preparing for the above-mentioned entrance examinations must focus on every subject. So here are some good ways to prepare for engineering entrance exams. Given below are some of the general tips you can follow in each subject to crack maximum marks.
1) Start ahead - As this will reduce strain and pressure. Many Engineering students tend to drain their valuable time around when the semester has just commenced. They find it convenient to do so because they feel that they just got free from the stress that faced along with the previous set of papers that they appeared for, earlier.
2 ) Concentrate on online study material also - Most students rely much on traditional Engineering books which are okay to study. But meanwhile, students should also keep an eye on the online course streaming as there the students can get to learn many things from across the globe. There they can get the latest update on the topic also.
3 ) Share knowledge to learn more - Students should do communicate and solve each other’s problems and help each other. And, it really helps to learn more things and clear many doubts about each other.
4 ) Kill the easiest sections of the syllabus - This is the killer strategy that will help you score more in exams with mere effort. The easiest sections are those in which you need to struggle really less and you know every inch of the concept. Knowing that you can easily solve all the problems related to that subject.
5 ) Trace the regular questions asked - Every subject has a certain set of questions that are asked pretty regularly. Students should take a view of almost all the recent year previous question papers and mark the frequently asked questions of the section of the subject from where such questions are asked. In this way, they can prepare most of the topics that they find might fall in the question paper.
However, it is constantly advisable to observe past trends and strategize for JEE. They can relate to the past exam exemplars of at least two years.
These entrance exams are not an easy nut to crack and students have to level- up their preparation for each subject- Physics, Chemistry, & Mathematics. All the entrance exams obey the different exam patterns and have some changes in the syllabus. Students are advised to refer to the paper pattern and syllabus for each exam and make a winning approach for the exam. This will enable students to save precious time during the exam and, help them attend maximum questions.
Physics
This subject holds prominence in all engineering entrance tests. This is the most important subject for students who choose to pursue engineering. It consists of technical aspects & gives basic knowledge of the topics that would be section of engineering subjects. The students are deemed to make their concepts clear and for that, they can refer to NCERT books for understanding the basic concepts in addition to the core books of Physics for the complex concepts. After analyzing a particular topic, they should try solving problems related to that topic, which will help them in understanding the formulae & concepts in a better way. For countering more complex problems students can refer to more books, focus areas being Mechanics, Modern Physics, Electrodynamics, Optics, & Thermodynamics.
Important Topic to Focus:
Reference Books:
Chemistry
Chemistry is an unusual subject and some students find it more troublesome compared to Physics and Mathematics. It contains theory, equations, reactions, diagrams, and formulae. Besides NCERT books for learning basic concepts, students should pick those books that make them understand the complex topics in an easier way.
The periodic table has a more prominent role to play and hence students should memorize it completely to save a lot of time during entrance exams. Studying a topic and solving the problems & equations related to that topic helps the students to remember the concepts & formulae in a significant manner. They require to build strong concepts across physical, organic & inorganic chemistry.
Recommended Books:
Mathematics
Mathematics is a very fascinating subject as it has only problems to solve. Students just need to-
Understanding the concepts & formulae, students are supposed to practice the problems regularly. On repeatedly solving the problems, students can create their own timesaver methods, which will help them solve the problems faster during entrance exams. Students should focus more on weaker topics and subjects, and allocate more time to them.
Recommended Books:
Students can refer to the books mentioned above and in addition also refer to books for focused study on topics like Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, etc.

Students have to be concentrated right from the commencement of 10+2 to have an opportunity to beat other profound minds and secure the top position in the entrance exams.
To be successful in the engineering entrance exams, here are some good ways to prepare for the engineering entrance exam.
Make a Schedule
One should always study making study timetables to succeed in any examination. Students should make a timetable before starting their preparation for entrance exams. Most entrance tests like IITJEE and BITSAT require students to prepare from the starting of class 9. Once they make the timetable, they should adhere to the routine and complete the syllabus as scheduled in the timetable. They have to make certain that all subjects are allotted equal time. They should also allocate time for mock tests & for sessions for clearing up the doubts.
Practice Regularly
As PCM subjects are problem-oriented, students need to practice problems regularly. Once they are done with any topic, they should practice solving related problems and make their concepts clear. Practicing problems will also help them create shortcut methods to solve problems which can help them save time during the exam.
Solve previous year Question papers
The best way to understand the difficulty level of the exam is to refer to and solve the previous year's question papers. It will also help students identify their level of preparation and time taken to solve the paper. On solving them frequently, students can learn how to manage the time & also know the pattern of the question paper.
Take time intervals
Because of the heat of preparation, it is required for students to take pauses. They can spend their rest time doing a constructive activity like playing a sport or solving a puzzle, etc. This will enable them to concentrate thoroughly when they restart studying & also some physical activity will keep their health intact.
References & Study Materials
Students should be cautious while deciding the study materials for specific entrance exam preparation. The NCERT books are the best for studying the basic theories in all subjects. Otherwise, students should choose appropriate books for studying complex concepts. They should refer to selective books as too many books might lead to confusion.
