UGC NET entrance exam is conducted by NTA twice a year to shortlist the eligible students for the posts of Assistant Professor or both Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor post in the UGC-recognized universities and colleges. Candidates who wish to pursue a career in the research field or want to teach in universities/colleges can appear in this exam. However, there are certain parameters which are needed to be met by all the applicants. In this article, we are going to discuss UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2025.
Before applying for UGC NET 2025, Candidates should ensure that they fulfill all the UGC NET Eligibility Criteria. Any failure to do so will be subject to the rejection of the application submitted by the candidates. The UGC NET eligibility criteria include various parameters including the candidate's nationality, Age and Education Qualification. If you look forward to appearing in the exam, you must fulfill the given eligibility criteria for UGC NET Exam:
Nationality: The applicant must be an Indian National. UGC NET Exam 2025 is conducted to determine the eligibility of the candidates for Assistant Professorship and Junior Research Fellowship Programmes for various Indian institutions, henceforth the candidates must be Indian National.
The candidates also have to fulfill the UGC NET Age Limit Criteria. Please note that the candidates belonging to the reserved category will get some relaxation on the age limit.
Below we have mentioned the UGC NET Age Limit Criteria 2025, please have a look:
(i) There is no upper age limit for applying for Assistant Professor through the UGC NET exam.
(ii) For UGC NET JRF, General category candidates must be aged 31 years or below. Their age shall not exceed 31 years. However, in some cases, the candidates are provided with some relaxation on age. Please refer to the table below:

(i) General category candidates who have completed their Master's (postgraduation degree) with minimum 55% marks in the concerned subject or any equivalent exam from a UGC recognized institute/university are eligible to apply for UGC NET Exam 2025.
(ii) Candidates who belong to the SC, ST, PwD or Transgender category and have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in their Master's degree (Postgraduation) in the concerned subject or any equivalent exam from a UGC-recognized institute/university are eligible to appear in the NET Exam.
(iii) Candidates who are currently pursuing their Master's degree (postgraduation course) or have appeared in the qualifying exam of their PG course are also eligible to appear in UGC NET Exam 2025. However, the condition is that they must complete their PG course within 2 years from the result declaration date of the UGC NET Exam. Please note that such candidates will be granted provisional allotment only and eligibility for Assistant Professorship will be granted only when they will complete their postgraduation with the minimum marks required as per UGC NET Eligibility Criteria.
(iii) Candidates who have qualified for CA or CS or ICWA are also eligible to appear in the UGC NET exam.
The candidates have to choose a subject for UGC NET Paper II, it should be a subject that was part of their postgraduation course. Please note that National Testing Agency may keep your result on hold in case you appear for a subject that is irrelevant or unrelated to your post-graduation degree.

UGC NET Exam 2025 is conducted twice in a year. They are held in two sessions - June Session and December Session. The UGC NET 2025 June session is held in two phases, Phase-I was held on 9th, 11th, and 12th July 2025 for 33 subjects and Phase II will be held between 20th and 30th September 2025 for 64 subjects.
