Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT)

AFCAT Exam 2023:

Air Force Common Admission Test Exam 2023 will be conducted by the IAF (Indian Air Force) this year in the month of September for the selection of male and female officers into all branches of the IAF except Dental and Medical. AFCAT is an exam that can literally give you wings if you are fond of jets and the sky. Then after clearing this exam, your dream can turn into reality. This examination is conducted for the recruitment of eligible candidates for the Small Service Commission and the Standing Commission in Indian Air Force Services.

Different options through AFCAT:

This test is applicable to the selection of an applicant into three branches:

Flying Branch (Short Service Commission Only)

  • It is one of the most prestigious branches where you can be a permanent commissioned pilot or a short-service commissioned pilot.
  • Permanent Commission entries are done by NDA, CDSE, and NCC Spl Entry.
  • Short Service entries are done through AFCAT.

Technical Branch 

  • The technical branch consists of the engineers required in Indian Air Force which is further divided into Aeronautical Engineers in Mechanical Branch and Aeronautical Engineers in Electronics Branch.
  • These both help to utilize aircrafts operations in any situation.

Ground Duty Branch

  • Ground duty branch is the mechanism that steers the Air Force; it includes managing human and material resources.
  • It is one of the few branches of the Indian Air Force that you can join as an officer.
  • The ground branch is further divided further and has two more branches.
    • Administration (responsible for both human and material resources to carry out various duties.)
    • Logistics (responsible for materials management of all the resources for Indian Air Force which ensures supervision of inventories and managing various equipment.)
  • These both are a section under the administrative branch which includes Fighter Controller, Accounts, Education, ATC, Met, etc.

AFCAT Exam 2023: Eligibility Criteria

In this section of the article, we will discuss the eligibility criteria or a standard by which the applicants will be judged to be a part of the Indian Air Force.

AFCAT Exam 2023 Eligibility Criteria for Flying Branch:

  • Nationality - Indian
  • Gender - Men and Women.
  • Marital Status - Single
  • Age - Candidate must be 20 to 24 years (at the time of convocation).

For the upper age limit Candidates who are holding a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxed up to 26 years.

Educational Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 60% marks is required in Maths & Physics at an intermediate level.
  • Graduates must have acquired a minimum of 60% from a recognized University
  • Final Year students are also eligible to apply, but there shouldn’t be any backlog included. At the time of AFSB Testing candidates are required to produce a Degree certificate issued by the University as per the demanded date.
Physical Standards Criteria:

The physical standard is another parameter of the AFCAT Exam eligibility criteria for men and women in the flying branch. Any candidate applying for AFCAT or aspiring to become a flying officer in the Indian Air Force should have these below mentioned physical standards:

  1. Height & Weight
  • Both men and women should be 162.5 cms with correlated weight.
  • the minimum height for Leg Length should be a minimum of 99 cms and a maximum of 120 cms.
  • Thigh Length should be a maximum of 64 cms.
  • Minimum sitting Height should be 81.5 cms and a maximum of 96 cms.
  1. Eyesight
  • For Vision, Minimum Visual Acuity should be 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in other, correctable to 6/6 only for hypermetropia, and Manifest Myopia should be nil.
  • If a candidate wants to be a part of the Flying Branch, Surgery for correction of vision is not valid in the Transport and Helicopter streams of Short Service Commission (Flying Branch).
  • Laser Eye Surgery should not have been carried out before the age of 20 years.
  • The axial length of the eye should not cross 25.5 mm as by the IOL master
  • At Least 12 months should have passed for Laser Eye Treatment before the medical examination.
  • The corneal thickness should not be less than 450 microns as measured by a corneal pachymeter should not be less than 450 microns.
  • Applicants with high refractive errors (>6D) before Laser Eye Surgery are to be excluded. 
  • Candidates must not suffer from night or color blindness.
AFCAT Exam 2023 Eligibility Criteria for Technical Branch:

Most of the students apply for AFCAT through the technical branch as most of the applicants belong from a technical background. The education qualification required for AFCAT in the technical branch is divided into two parts:

Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics)

In order to get in through the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) branch-

  • A candidate should score a minimum of 60% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at the intermediate level.
  • A minimum of four-year graduation / integrated post-graduation in Engineering / Technology from a recognized University.
  • Telecommunication Engineers should have a minimum of 60% aggregate score from a recognized institute.

Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical)

The qualification requirement for AFCAT in Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical) branch are:

  • A candidate should have a minimum of 60% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at an intermediate level.
  • A minimum of 4-year graduation or postgraduate qualification in Engineering / Technology is required from a recognized University.
AFCAT 2023 Exam Eligibility Criteria for Ground Duty Branches:

The ground duty branch is divided into 3 parts:

  • Administration & Logistics branch
  • Accounts branch
  • Education branch

Qualification for these 3 branches is:

Administration & logistics branch:

Graduates are required to have a minimum of a 3-year degree course with an aggregate score of 60% marks obtained from a recognized university. Identical or cleared area A and B assessment of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a perceived college with at least 60% aggregate.

Accounts branch:

Graduates are required to have a minimum of a 3-year degree course with an aggregate score of 60% marks obtained from a recognized university. Identical or cleared area A and B assessment of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a perceived college with at least 60% aggregate.

Education branch:

MBA/MCA or MA/M.Sc. degree in ( Defence Studies/ Psychology / English/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Chemistry / IT/Mgt. / Mass Communication / Journalism / Public Relation Statistics / International relations/ International Studies Computer Science/ IT/Mgt. / Mass Communication / Journalism / Public Relation) with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. All papers in Post-Graduation (Minimum two years program) and 60% marks in graduation (both recognized by UGC/Competent Accreditation Authority).
