Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute (Formerly known as Government Central Textile Institute), Kanpur is a leading textile institute of North India. It made a fair start in 1914.
However, in 1937, Govt. Central Textile Institute was formed in its present form by merger of two prominent textile institutes i.e., one at Kanpur and the other at Roorkee, Department of Textile Technology and Thomson Civil Engineering College of Roorkee and two diploma programs were commenced therein.
In the year 1958 four-year degree Programs in Textile Technology & Textile Chemistry were commenced. The Institute was affiliated to Agra University but on formation of the University in Kanpur in the year 1966, it got affiliated to Kanpur University. In 1976 the institute initiated a four-year degree programme in Man Made Fibre Technology.
Later on, three-year diploma Programmes were transferred to Government Polytechnic Kanpur in the year 1985 and thereafter the institute has been offering graduate and postgraduate Programmers with Ph.D. research facilities.
The 4th degree programme in Textile Engineering was included under World Bank assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme of Government of India and Government of State of Uttar Pradesh in 2005.
