Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith University (MGKVP) is a government University situated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is an NAAC accredited university and has over 350 authorized colleges and 30 departments. Kashi Vidyapeeth Banaras delivers both academic and professional courses in streams such as Arts, Commerce, Law, Science, and many more. Formed in the year 1921, MGKVP is one of the largest universities in Uttar Pradesh and is spread over 6 districts namely Balia, Bhadohi, Chandauli, Varanasi, Mirzapur, and Sonbhadra.
Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt and Bhagwan Das formed the university in Varanasi during the non -cooperation movement of the freedom struggle. Firstly named Kashi Vidyapith, the university was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in 1995. It was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi.
Inspired by Gandhi's call for self-reliance and swaraj (self-rule), the Kashi Vidyapith was the earliest modern university formed by Indians in British India. The Mahatma Gandhi University Varanasi, along with fellow such as the Jamia Millia Islamia and the Gujarat Vidyapith, were alleviated from the control and support of British authorities, supported and managed entirely by Indian nationalists and educationalists.
Attracting young Indians from across the country, its faculty involved prominent nationalists and scholars. Many famous Indian industrialists and politicians provided financial and administrative support to the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith Varanasi.

Computer Centre
University computer center is a centralized computer laboratory system initially situated in the central office, the computer centre was later shifted to the social work department. The computer center was upgraded in 2021 through the rusa fund. Presently situated on the first floor of the department of psychology. Currently, the computer center has 60 computers and a printer with internet connections. The computer center is an open-access research center for the faculty and research students registered in the university.
Central Library
The central library of the university is located in the middle of the university campus and the total area in the library of both the floors is 2250 sq. meter. Currently, it has a total collection of 267994 documents. It also includes a section of unpublished theses. The collected information material has been arranged discipline wise in multistoried stacks.
National Cadet Corps
The NCC aims at enhancing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service amongst young citizens. Further, it aims at making a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life, who will serve the Nation regardless of which career they select. Needless to say, the NCC also offers an environment conducive to encouraging young Indians to join the armed forces.
University Sports Council
The University Sports Council at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in Varanasi is a managerial body responsible for overseeing sports activities and encouraging physical fitness among students at the university. The Sports Council plays a vital role in conducting and coordinating various sports events, tournaments, and championships within the college and university. It aims to provide opportunities for students to participate in different sports and recreational activities, encouraging overall physical well-being and sportsmanship.
