Agra College enjoys being the oldest institution of learning in North India. It was formed in 1823 A.D. with the developing efforts of the noted Sanskrit scholar and astrologer Pandit Gangadhar Shastri. The institution operated as the Government College till 1883. After that, its management was handed over to the Board of Trustees and a Committee of Management, both approved by the Government.
Ever since its establishment in 1823, Agra College has enjoyed the singular privilege of reaching out to the world. These illustrious personalities have carved out an enviable place in the national and international arena. Among its former students are personalities like Pt. K.D. Paliwal, Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru, Shri Gopal Swaroop Pathak, Justice S.K. Dhar, Shri Gulzari Lal Nanda, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and a few others.
In 1924, the college celebrated its centenary, which was honored by the then Viceroy, Sir R. D. Issac. Initially, the college was associated with Calcutta University, then from 1887 to 1926, it was affiliated with Allahabad University, and since 1927, it has been affiliated with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra (earlier known as Agra University).
In keeping with its adherence to academic excellence and continuous development, Agra College, Agra added another feather to its cap in 1999 with the formation of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (under a self-finance scheme). This was in addition to the existing four Faculties - Science, Arts, Fine Arts, and Law.
