SP (Superintendent of Police) is a post of gazetted officer in the IPS section, who heads the police department in a district. It is the responsibility of the SP to keep the district safe and sound from negative situations of corrupt terrorist or criminal activities.
In the police force, there are three ranks in the name of Superintendent, namely, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and Superintendent of Police (SP).
The Superintendent of Police is mainly responsible for maintaining law and order and preventing crime. The role of the SP is to take preventive measures to prevent crimes.
He or she is also responsible for making secure arrangements, on occasions of rallies, festivals, and other events where the public gathers in large quantities. Process and Eligibility
The process to become SP (Superintendent of Police) is briefly listed below for students who wish to become SP. Students must graduate from 10+2 from a recognized board and pursue a Bachelor’s degree in any field, from a recognized university or college. This is a minimum academic requirement to become SP.
After this, the student has three options that he or she can choose from.
- The first option is to appear for the UPSC CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) and score a rank above 100. This test is a part of the UPSC Prelims Paper, and the students must prepare accordingly. If the student is qualified and passes the three stages of the UPSCC, then he or she can opt for the IPS post among other level Posts. The starting rank after you clear the exam will be DSP or ACP. The students will soon become S.P.
- The second option for students is to appear and clear their State Public Service Commission Examination. This exam is conducted in different States and students can hope to attain powerful positions such as D.S.P, etc. However, the promotion is slower in this option than in the first option.
- The third option is Sub Inspector Entry into your State Police Department. Once a student has become a Sub Inspector, they must work hard and solve crimes with the utmost dedication and patriotism. If the duties and rules are followed by the Sub Inspector, they can hope for a promotion to the highest positions of SP.
There is another way to become S.P, in CBI, SI can be promoted to SP and DIG as a promotion. Since the last two options are usually straightforward, we will concentrate on the first two options.
Civil Services Examination by UPSC
Civil Services is the first option that students opt for after their graduation. Although it is very difficult to crack, students start preparing for it in their Bachelor's studies. Students usually tend to study for long hours and practice tons of papers each week and day.
You can either join any coaching classes, which make sure a student passes all three stages of the CSE by UPSC, namely Prelims, Main, and the interviews. The candidate must decide which post they wish to opt for. The eligibility and recruitment process for various posts is different and students must choose accordingly.
If you are targeting posts of SP, ASP, or DSP, the candidate needs to clear IPS examinations. The tests are both written and physical tests.
Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is another that conducts the recruitment exams for Sub-inspector of Police in several states.
Physical Requirement Criteria for SP
There are a fixed number of seats and hence students need to score a rank in the exams. The candidates that get selected will also have to pass a physical test, of which the requirements are listed below.
Male:
- Height: 165 cm (SC or ST- 160 cm)
- Chest: 84 cm (Expansion- 5cm)
- Eye Sight: 6/6 or 6/9 for a good eye.
Female:
- Height: 150 cm (SC or ST- 145 cm)
- Chest: 79 cm (expansion- 5 cm)
- Eye Sight: 6/6 or 6/9 distant vision for a good eye.
After the candidate is selected, he or she will be trained at a Police Academy. After successful completion of the training course, the candidate needs to join his or her respective batch. They will not be S.P yet. You will be promoted to ASP (Assistant Superintendent of Police) in two years, After that, depending on your cadre or performance and your profile, you will be promoted to the post of S.P.
