In India, companies that are owned by the government are referred to as Public Sector Undertakings, or PSUs. The central government, any state government, or a combination of the central government and one or more state governments owns the majority (51 percent or more) of the paid share capital in a PSU. Huge employment opportunities in a variety of technical and management fields are frequently offered by a number of PSUs operating under the Government of India's auspices.
The PSU sector is divided into two categories: State PSU and Central PSU. Nonetheless, PSU is further divided into three groups according to the revenue yield, which are as follows:
Top public sector corporations are granted the title of Maharatna, which allows them to invest abroad for up to Rs. 5,000 crores without obtaining permission from the government. The corporation must have made over Rs. 5,000 crores in net profit annually, Rs. 15,000 crores in net worth, and Rs. 25,000 crores in turnover during the previous three years in order to be considered a Maharatna. The following companies currently hold Maharatna status: IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, SAIL, BPCL, CIL, GAIL, HPCL, and IOCL.
The Department of Public Enterprises grants these businesses the designation of Navratna. A score of 60 out of 100 is required for the company to be eligible as a Navratna. Net profit to net worth, total labour cost to total cost of production or cost of services, PBDIT (profit before depreciation, interest, and taxes) to capital employed, PBDIT to turnover, EPS (earning per share), and inter-sectoral performance are the six criteria that determine the score. To become a Navratna, a corporation must first be made a Miniratna and have four independent directors on its board. With the Navratna classification, one can invest up to Rs. 1000 crores and enjoy rights that increase financial and operational autonomy.
Benefits associated with the Navratna designation include more financial and operational autonomy as well as the ability to invest up to Rs. 1000 crores, or 15% of their net worth, in a single project without needing permission from the government. These businesses may spend up to thirty percent of their net worth annually, but no more than Rs. 1000 crores. Additionally, they will be free to establish alliances, launch subsidiaries overseas, and engage in joint ventures.
