Merchant Navy Entrance Exam: If you are a daring person and have always dreamt of a career in the vast oceans, then Merchant Navy is just for you. The Merchant Navy deals with the transportation of cargo and sometimes passengers through the sea.

A career in the Merchant Navy is exciting, adventurous, and unique. However, this is also a demanding career option as a Merchant Navy officer has to spend a long time on the seas, away from their families and loved ones.

The time duration of a Merchant Navy Officer at the seas is 6 to 7 months. Merchant Navy is one of the top aspiring professions among the young generations due to the rising interest in Maritime career prospects.

The salary range of a Maritime officer is very high compared to other professions and a career in Merchant Navy allows the candidate to travel around the world and know different cultures. The other benefits of a Merchant Navy Officer include tax-free income, long vacations, quick promotions, and endless future opportunities in different fields.

The best part of a Merchant Navy exam 2024 is that it can be opted for,  after Class 12 Board exams. The duration of the training is 1 year and candidates get a stipend during the training period. After completion of the training, candidates can join the Merchant Navy with very high salaries as compared to other jobs. Candidates can also join the Merchant Navy after completion of their Class 10 exams.

The Merchant Navy exam 2024 (IMU CET) or the Indian Merchant Navy Common Entrance exam is conducted by the Indian Maritime University. There are both Government and Private Institutes that conduct Maritime training (pre-sea courses) for Indian citizens. After completion of the training, candidates can join either as Marine Officers or Rating.

IMU CET Indian Merchant Navy Common Entrance test is conducted in online mode and has centers all over India. IMU CET is held for the admission of the candidates to the IMU DNS course or the IMU Deck Cadet course. Aspiring candidates must apply for the IMU CET exams online. Apart from the online application, candidates must also make a special application to RPSL Shipping Companies for the sponsorship selection test.

Aspiring candidates can also join the Merchant Navy as Petty Officers or Fitters. The courses for the post of Petty Officer include:

  • FPFF (Fire prevention and fire fighting)
  • PSSR (Pre Startup Safety Review)
  • PST (Public Safety Testing)
  • EFA (Elementary First Aid Course)

Eligibility Criteria for Merchant Navy Exams

Aspiring candidates who want to join the Merchant Navy must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Candidates must be unmarried males or females and a citizen of India.
  • Candidates must qualify for the Class 12 Board exams with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as the compulsory subjects.
  • Candidates with normal vision will be preferred. However, glasses with plus or minus 2.5 power will be allowed.
  • Admission includes a screening test followed by a written exam.
  • Candidates who clear the written test will have to appear for a personal interview and a Medical round.
  • A short-term ship training course is given to the candidate before the actual job. The ship training course involves learning the basic security measures of sailing.
