The Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University was established in 1996 by an Act passed by the parliament. It is located in the City of Nawabs, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). It is a central university that is accredited A++ by NAAC. It has also been ranked by NIRF and ARIIA. The university also has a satellite Campus at Amethi established in the year of 2016. 

The university offers 99 courses including Diploma/integrated PG Programmes/UG/PG/M. Phil. and Ph.D. at its main campus and satellite campus at Amethi. The university has been named among the top 10 central universities in the country. Besides, BBAU is also included among the top 3 central universities of the state.

They offer various facilities which include a Library, Hostels, Health Centre, Media Centre, Guest House, Sports, etc., The University reserves 50 percent of seats under all courses for the students of Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes. However, 10% is also reserved for the Economically Weaker Section. It also provides scholarships and financial assistance to needy students.

• Central Library - The Central Library of BBAU has been named Gautam Buddha Central Library after the name of Lord Gautam Buddha. The Library is governed by the LAC (Library Advisory Committee). The seating capacity of the Library is more than 400 users at a time. It has an assemblage of several books
• Auditorium - The auditorium of the university is well-equipped with the latest audio and visual aids. It has a seating capacity of 1,100 persons. It is a fully air-conditioned and fully furnished auditorium. 
• Health Centre - The University Health Centre provides primary health services to all the students, administrative staff, and faculty members including dependants, non-teaching staff as well as contractual staff of the University.
