Designing is an art with a function which is categorized into four major specializations:-

1. Fashion Designing:- It is one of the most lucrative fields that deal with clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, lifestyle, and body. The scope of a profession in fashion designing is much more when you have the right desire and passion for fashion. This course is shaped by cultural and social attitudes that vary with the time and place. There are many courses in the field of Fashion Designing that can be pursued after intermediate such as:

2. Product/Industrial Designing:- It is the field that used to create new products to be sold by a manufacturer to its consumers. Product Designing is about problem-solving and visualizing the needs of the user as well as bringing them a solution. It is primarily concerned with the relationship between products, systems and the customers who use them. The Coursework aims at generating and developing new ideas effectively by a fixed process which leads to the creation of a new product. The designing skills of Product Designers deal with both the practicality of the products they design as well as their visual appeal.

Eligibility

All the specializations of Designing comprise of certain criteria that need to be followed by every individual who wants to pursue this robust course. Before taking admission in any field of designing, candidates need to go through the directed eligibility criteria:

  • The basic eligibility to get admission in the program is that students must have qualified 12th standard from science stream with subjects (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics).
  • Students must have passed 12th with a minimum aggregate score of 50% from any recognized educational board of India.
  • To get admission in the foremost and top-notch fashion designing institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) or Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology (VIFT), candidates need to clear the entrance examination.
  • To enrol in any private fashion designing institution, then candidates from any stream (science, commerce or arts) can apply for the course.
  • However, some institutes conduct their own entrance examination for the students to clear.
  1. National Institute of Design Exam (NID)
  2. All India Entrance Examination for Design (AIEED)
  3. Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED)

Note:- The cut-off marks of entrance examinations can vary from institute to institute.

Process

Admission Procedure

For seeking admission in Undergraduate courses in design, various colleges of India follow a different pattern, but the primary pattern which is followed almost in every college is as follows:

Step 1- Fill up the Application Form of the college in which you want to take admission.
Step 2- Clear the entrance exam.
Step 3- Go for the Group discussion round/Personal Interview round and crack it.
Step 4- And, finally get admission in the selected program.

If you want to pursue such courses from reputed institutes like NIFT. Then, the admission process of NIFT starts after qualifying the two tests either Creative Ability Test (CAT) or the General Ability Test (GAT).

Here are the several segments that come under GAT:

1-Quantitative Ability
2-English Comprehension
3-Communication Ability
4-Analytical Ability
5-General Knowledge & Current Affairs

  • Whereas, CAT is held in order to examine the hunch skills, the endowment of observation, innovation in developing a concept & design ability of the applicant.
  • These entrance examinations are later followed by a Group Discussion Round in which the skills of the candidates are judged.
  • The next stage after the GD round, a candidate reaches the last round of admission procedure,i.e Personal Interview round.
  • In this last stage, candidates are shortlisted on the basis of the above mentioned three stages of the admission process,i.e. the written test, group discussion, and personal interview.

Salary

Salary Package

In this separate field, candidates with high skills and experience can get lucrative salary packages in India. On an average, a fresher employee can expect a minimum salary package of 2 lacs to 6 lacs while an established designer can get a minimum of 8 lacs up to beyond limits. The earning of the designers is determined by their skills, intelligence, and perfection of doing work. It depends on the design they made, the brand of product, quality of the product, ease of purchase and the approach of a designer. A designer with the experience of 8 to 10 years can be given the opportunity to get selected for designing the costumes of celebrities. The freelance designers usually work under contracts for longer hours and earn satisfactory salary wages.
