Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar founded and established these three colleges in a rural setup at Chidambaram in the early 1920s:

Sri Minakshi Tamil College
Sri Minakshi College
Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College

Later in 1928, after these colleges were handed over to the local government in an agreement Annamalai University came to exist. As per the Annamalai University Act 1928, Annamalai University was established on 01/01/1929. The engagement of the Annamalai University Act, which came into action on September 25, 2013, turned out to be the most significant development for Annamalai University.
