IIT Bombay Admission Process 2026:

IIT Bombay follows a merit-based admission process for all its programmes. The institute does not conduct its own entrance exam — instead, it relies on national-level examinations conducted by various agencies.

B.Tech Admission

Admission to the B.Tech programme requires clearing JEE Main first, followed by JEE Advanced. Only the top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Seat allotment is done through the JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling process based on rank, category, and preference.

The JEE Advanced cutoff for IIT Bombay varies by branch. For Computer Science, the closing rank is typically within the top 100 in the General category. Electrical Engineering closes around rank 300-400, while Mechanical Engineering closes around rank 600-800.

M.Tech Admission

M.Tech admission is based on a valid GATE score. Shortlisted candidates are called for a written test and/or interview at IIT Bombay. The final selection depends on the GATE score, test performance, and interview. Some departments also accept candidates through the COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal).

MBA Admission (SJMSOM)

The MBA programme at the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management admits students based on their CAT score. Shortlisted candidates go through a group discussion and personal interview round. The typical CAT percentile cutoff for SJMSOM is around 95+.

M.Sc Admission

M.Sc admissions are done through the IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters) exam. The exam is held once a year, usually in February, and covers subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biotechnology, and others.

Ph.D Admission

Ph.D admissions happen twice a year — in July and January. Candidates with a valid GATE, UGC-NET, or CSIR-NET score can apply. The selection process includes a written test and an interview conducted by the respective department. All selected Ph.D scholars receive a monthly fellowship of Rs. 31,000 to Rs. 35,000.
