Indian Government Schemes - List of Government Schemes 2024, Launch Dates

List of Government Schemes: Government Schemes in India are launched by the central or state governments for the social or economic welfare of the citizens of the country. These schemes are introduced and implemented by the government to resolve the socio-economic issues that affect our society in some way.

There are various schemes brought in by the government that benefitted the common citizens of India in the past and recently. In this article, we are going to discuss such Government Schemes 2024 which positively impacted the lives of the masses in India.

List of Indian Government Schemes

Below we have briefed some of the important government schemes for UPSC exam:

Agnipath Scheme 2024

The Government of India recently announced Agnipath Scheme  on 14th June 2024. The Agnipath Scheme is introduced for the recruitment of young jawans in the Indian Armed Forces.

Under Agnipath Scheme, the youth is encouraged to serve in the Indian Army for four years.

The primary reason behind introducing this scheme is to minimize the age range of the armed forces personnel and to reduce the escalating pension bills.

The implementation of this scheme will reduce the funds being spent on salaries and pensions and will be utilized in much-needed military resources and modernization.

Key Highlights of Agneepath Scheme

  • The candidates aged under 17.5 years to 23 years old can apply for Indian Armed Forces under Agnipath Scheme. 

  • Under this scheme, the young aspirants will be recruited by the Short Service Commission for a total of 4 years including a training period. After 4 years, only 25% of total recruits will be retained by IAF and others will be retired with an exit retirement package and reservation in various state government jobs such as Assam Rifles, CAPF, and State Police. 

Shreshta Scheme

Under Shreshta Scheme (Scheme for residential education for students in High school in Targeted Areas), the scheduled caste people will be provided high-quality education in the best private residential schools in the country.

The objective of this scheme is to uplift the socio-economic status of the SC category people by providing their children with access to quality education.

Key Highlights of Shreshta Scheme

  • The facility deprived SC students belonging to backward areas will get admission to Class 9th and Class 11th of CBSE-affiliated private schools. 

  • Under Shreshta Scheme, approximately 3000 seats will be reserved in the CBSE-affiliated schools for such students in Class 9th & Class 11th, and the entire education expense and the residential fee will be borne by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. 

  • Students who belong to economically weaker income groups within the SC community with a parental income up to Rs 2.5 L.P.A are eligible to apply for this exam. 

  • The students studying in Class 8th and Class 10th will be able to avail of the benefits of the SHRESHTA scheme by appearing in the transparent selection exam NETS (National Entrance Test for SHRESHTA) which will be administered by NTA for providing admission to Class 9th & Class 11th under this scheme.

Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMYAG)

Launched on 25th June 2015, It is a housing scheme for rural citizens that aims to provide "Housing to all" rural people by the year 2024. The objective of this yojana is to replace the "kaccha houses" built with temporary walls and roofs with a "Pakka house".

Each housing loan or house provided under this scheme will be equipped with basic amenities and sewage facilities, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin was launched by the Government of India in 2015 and it is being implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Key Highlights of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY)

  • PMJAY will focus on the poor, deprived families of rural areas and labor families in urban areas as per records of Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 data.

  • People who belong to SC/ST categories, non-SC-ST categories freed bonded labors, widows or kins of defense personnel martyred or died on duty, ex-servicemen and retired parliamentary force members, minorities and disabled persons can be the beneficiaries of the PM Aawas Yojana -Gramin.

  • The selection of the beneficiaries for this scheme will be done through a three-step validation : (i) Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 (ii) Gram Sabha (iii) Geo-tagging.

  • The PMAYG was started to provide 2.7 crore houses to the selected beneficiaries. So far, around 1.8 crore houses have been constructed under this scheme which is 67.72% of the target numbers.

  • In the Union Budget 2024, the Government of India allocated Rs 48,000 crores for PM Awas Yojana. According to the new budget for PMAY 2024, over 80 lac houses will be constructed for the identified beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (for affordable housing scheme). Around 60,000 houses will be added as beneficiaries of the PMAYG scheme in urban and rural areas.

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana - Skill India

PMKVY is a scheme initially launched under the Skill India mission launched on 15th July 2015 (World Youth Skills Day). This scheme also aims to create new career opportunities for talented individuals within the nation and revamp the underdeveloped sectors.

The objective of PMKVYis to make the enable the youth of India to become self-sustainable to earn a better livelihood.

Key Highlights of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)

  • Under this scheme, over 40 crore youth will be provided with adequate education and training to develop market-oriented skills by the year 2024. As an outcome of this scheme over 9.85 lakh candidates were trained in the year 2015-2016. 

  • The Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship launched the PMKVY 3.0  last year on 18th June 2024 as a step towards the initiative "Atmanirbhar Bharat". The implementation of the PMKVY 3.0  scheme will be done in an improved decentralized structure with bigger objectives and support from state/union territories and districts. An outlay of Rs 948.90 crores is set to train atleast 8 lacs candidates. 

  • Around 728 PM Kaushal Kendras, non-PMKK empanelled training centers and 200+ Industrial Training Institutes will be in action to make PMKVY 3.0-Skill India a successful initiative. 

Start-Up India Seed Fund Scheme

This scheme was announced under the Start-Up India initiative on 16th January 2016 by the Government of India to provide financial assistance to India-based startups for market entry, proof of concept, and product trials. prototype development and commercialization.

Key Highlights of Start-Up India Seed Fund Scheme

  • The scheme was launched by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) with an expenditure of Rs 945 crores. A start-up business recognized and approved by the department and incorporated not more than 2 years ago is eligible to avail of the benefits of this scheme. Also, the start-ups should not have gotten financial support of more than Rs 10 lacs from any other state government or central government scheme.

  •  This scheme promised to support about 3600 entrepreneurs through 300 incubators in 4 years. Financial assistance up to Rs 5 crores will be granted to the eligible incubators selected by the Experts Advisory Committee administered by the DPIIT.

  • The incubators selected by the committee will be granted Rs 20 Lacs for validation of proof of concept, product trials, and prototype development for the start-up.

  • Financial assistance up to Rs 50 Lacs will be given to the selected start-ups for commercialization, market entry, and scaling up the business.

Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana

PMJDYwas launched by the Government of India under the leadership of current PM Narendra Modi on 28th August 2014. This scheme was introduced and implemented to provide financial inclusion to the needy segments of the nation.

Financial Inclusion means access to financial services (such as bank accounts, credit, loans, remittances, insurance, and pension) and sufficient credit to vulnerable groups on time.

Key Highlights of Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana

  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana scheme, a Person having no bank account opened in their name can open one basic savings bank deposit (BSBD) account can be created in any bank branch or Bank Mitra (Business Correspondent) outlet.

  • Bank Accounts opened under the PMJDY do not require to have any minimum balance maintained.

  • The PMJDY account holders will also earn interest on the deposit amount in the bank accounts and they will also be provided a Rupay debit card to make withdrawals and transactions.

  • An Accident Insurance cover of Rs 1 Lac (Rs 2 Lac to the new account holders who have opened their PMJDY accounts after 28 August 2018) will be given along with the RuPay card to the account holders.

  • An Overdraft Facility of Rs 10,000 will also be provided to the PMJDY account holders. Overdraft is the amount of money that you have spent that is more than the amount you have deposited in your bank account. Precisely the eligible PMJDY account holders will get an OD facility to spend Rs 10,000.

  • The PMJDY scheme bearers are also eligible to claim the benefit of other schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Atal Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Yojana, MUDRA Scheme.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana

Also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, Ayushman Bharat Yojana is a health care scheme launched on 23rd September 2018 to help the economically weaker sections of the society to get proper healthcare facilities. The scheme plans to make healthcare facilities completely cashless for the financially incapable sections of the nation.

Key Highlights of Ayushman Bharat Yojana

  • The scheme was rolled out to provide health insurance covers to 50 crore citizens in India for secondary and tertiary care. 

  • The PMJAY scheme aims to provide healthcare to 10 crore families ( on average 5 members in each family) especially those who belong to an economically weaker background or have lower middle income. An insurance cover of Rs 5 Lac is granted per family who are selected as beneficiaries of this scheme. 

  • The healthcare coverage provided to the PMJAY beneficiaries includes 3 days of pre-hospitalization and 15 days of post-hospitalization expenses. Also, the expenses of approx 1,400 medical procedures are borne by the government. 

  • The beneficiaries are allotted an e-card that can be used to avail of the health care services at an impaneled hospital located anywhere in India. 

  • Ayushman Bharat Scheme's Healthcare benefit package covers various expenses of surgery, medical and daycare treatment, medicine costs, and diagnostic expenses. 

  • The Ayushman Bharat is an entitlement-based scheme that doesn't need any formal enrollment. There are no restrictions on family size or age to avail of the benefits of this scheme. 

Mudra Yojana (Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana)

Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana was launched on 8th April 2015. The scheme was rolled out to help small-scale businesses by providing them loan assistance.

Under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, non-profitable companies and profitable companies (which are non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises) can avail of a loan of upto Rs 10 Lacs to scale up their business. These loans will be called Mudra loans under PMMY Scheme.

Key Highlights of Mudra Yojana (PMMY)

  • The types of companies that are authorized to grant MUDRA loans under the Pradhan Mantri Yojana Scheme are Railway Recruitment Boards, Small Finance Banks, Micro Finance Institutions, Non-Banking Financial Corporations, and commercial banks.

  •  The industries that can avail of the loan under the PMMY scheme are Business Vendors, Truck Owners, Self-employed Entrepreneurs, Handicraftsmen, Small-scale manufacturers, Restoration & repair shops, and Service-based companies, food production industry, Agricultural sector, Shopkeepers, and Handicraftsmen.

  • There are three types of mudra loan schemes namely Shishu, Kishor, and Tarun. Shishu Mudra scheme grants a loan of Rs 50,000, the Kishor Mudra scheme's loan amount ranges between Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 Lacs and the Tarun Mudra scheme allows the beneficiary to take loans ranging from Rs 5 Lacs to Rs 10 Lacs.

  • MUDRA is a financial institution set up by the government, It stands for Micro Units Development & Refinance Agency Ltd. This Institution is set up to provide funding to non-corporate small-scale businesses. 

  • Loans are given to underprivileged and disadvantaged sections of society such as Minority Community borrowers, SC/ST/OBC borrowers, and women entrepreneurs under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna Scheme. According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, the MUDRA Yojana helped in generating about 1.12 crore jobs between the years 2015 to 2018 among which 69 lacs were accounted for by women.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The scheme was launched on 1st May 2016, it aims to safeguard the health of rural women and children by providing them LPG fuel for cooking, so they don't have to work in smoky kitchens and wander in unsafe areas in search of firewood.

This scheme promised to deliver 5 crores free LPG connections will be provided to Below Poverty Line families with the financial support of Rs 1600 per connection in 3 years.

Key Highlights of Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana

  • In the first year of PMUY, around 2 crore connections were distributed, As of October 2017 around 3 crores connections were distributed and the total distributed LPG connections crossed the marks of 5.8 crores by December 2018. 44% of the total distributions were done to the SC and ST families.

  • On 10th August 2024, the government launched the second phase of Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana and named it Ujjawala 2.0. The objective of Ujjawala 2.0 (PMUY phase-II) was to provide benefits to the migrants who reside in other states and face difficulty to present address proof. Under these schemes, the migrants only need to submit a "Self-Declaration" to avail the benefit of the Ujjawala Scheme. 

  • Under Ujjawala 2.0, an additional 1 crore LPG connections will be provided to the eligible families. All the beneficiaries of Ujjawala 2.0 will also get a free first refill and a hotplate.

Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana

This is another important Government Scheme for UPSC Preparation. It was launched under the leadership of Mr. Narendra Modi on 4th May 2017. It is a pension scheme that aims to provide social and financial security to senior citizens of India.

The objective behind this scheme is to protect the elderly from unfavorable market conditions in the future which may lead to deterioration of interest on income.

The Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana is administered by the Department of Financial Services, Govt. of India.

Key Highlights of Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana

  • Earlier this scheme was valid till 31st March 2020 but it is extended till March 2024.

  • Under Pradhan Mantri Scheme, a senior citizen can make an investment up to Rs 15 Lacs, and the tenure of the investment policy will be 10 years. After the investment, they will get an assured Return interest of 7.40% per annum.

  • Senior citizens will be allowed to withdraw a monthly pension of Rs 1000 or more depending on the amount invested in the scheme. The maximum pension amount one can withdraw under this scheme is Rs 10,000.

  • The pension plan can be chosen by the pensioner during the time of purchasing the policy, they can choose from the pension payable plan of monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly.

  • The benefits of this scheme can be availed Online or offline through LIC - Life Insurance Corporation. Online LIC has given the authority to operate the PMVVY Scheme.
