Group discussion or GD round is conducted to judge the personality of aspirants. In colleges, GD is orchestrated to assess behaviour traits such as leadership skills, analytical skills, divergent skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills etc. As in the game of football, where you play like a team, passing the ball to each team member and aim for a common goal, GD is also based on unity, teamwork, incorporating views of different participants to reach a common goal.

It is basically a group of people who deliberate their ideas, views and opinion on a particular issue or situation with other participants either formally or informally. Colleges conduct group discussion rounds for the students so that they should be aware and updated of what all is going over the world.

Before preparing for GD topic it is essential to know the rules and focus on improving group skills as it might help to tackle any GD even if the applicant does not have enough knowledge about the given topic.

Purpose of Group Discussion:-

1- Helps in learning more

2- Generating more ideas about the topic

3- One gets to know his mistakes and weakness

4- Build confidence

5- It enhances listening skills

Different types of Group Discussion


Mainly GD is divided into 3 categories:-

  • Topical Group Discussions-

Topical group discussion is based on current affairs or static matters – for example, a GD can be held on the recent election in different states or whether India should adopt a presidential model of democracy or not?

  • Case-studies-

It includes a discussion with a complex business situation. Such cases usually have multiple problems embedded in the given condition, and the group is required to analyse the situation, identify the problems, and suggest a way out.

  • Abstract Group Discussions-

These types of discussions offer no definite framework of the topic, and hence no definite direction to take in the discussion. Instead of these participants are required to interpret the topic on their own and demonstrate innovative thinking during group discussion.

Group Discussion Tips:-

  • The student should have the patience to listen attentively.
  • Commence your point in such a way that it is easy for others to understand.
  • Make a proper structure of your thought and present it logically.
  • Usually, the topics selected are from current affairs, hence it is required to read more and develop a keen interest in current affairs.
  • Respect the thoughts of other people.
  • Train your mind to think analytically. Grasp the points of others and blend it with your viewpoint.
  • Be a leader and follow silence for few minutes after the announcement of the topic. If possible, grasp your thoughts in few seconds and start the discussion as soon as possible.
  • Try to start with the positive impacts in the beginning.
  • Your body language says a lot about you. Sit attentively on the chair.
  • Avoid negative signs such as nervous body movements, having a sceptical expression, constantly moving, folding your hands across your chest and so on.
  • At last, don’t sit as if you are done with your point. Get involved till the end and try to grab more chances.

Traits of Group Discussion:-

Traits can be considered as characteristics of group discussions.

  • Knowledge-

Knowledge about the topic can never be replaced in a GD. No matter how good you are in communicating, but if your sentences don't reflect that you are knowledge bank then it's probably not going to work out.

  • Alertness and presence of mind-

In group discussion the attention of an individual is a must. He should listen to the other person's thoughts and keep an argument. This shows the attentiveness of candidate and how much importance he is giving to someone during his turn.

  • Out of the box thinking-

Yes! This the something unprecedented. You need to be creative and have to put points that might amaze the tribunal. Remember, while working there are times when we need to find out solutions to the problem in a better way, thinking out of the box helps you find smart and good solutions.

  • Better understanding of the subject-

GD offers better understanding of subjects to deep dive in that. It expands the horizon of knowledge and learning.

  • Solve problems-

Group discussions bring together a group of people holding diverse opinions to solve a problem. It helps in changing the thought process from a narrow to a wider view, thereby paving the way to solutions.

Roles of participants during Group Discussion:-

  • Beginner/Leader:

The one who starts Group Discussion. He elaborates the topic and suggests new ideas. Sometimes he may not have enough subject knowledge to present the viewpoints effectively.

  • Seeker of information-

He tries to grasp information from others in order to prepare for his turn. It usually happens when one does not have much knowledge about the given topic.

  • Disseminator of Information-

The one who prefers to share information and facts about the topic.

  • Seeker of Opinion-

He tries to gather opinion from others and also asks others to express their opinion.

  • Giver of Opinion-

Jumps to give his viewpoint or opinion about the views shared by the previous participants.

  • Analyst-

The task of an analyst who analyses and clarifies the ideas and opinions discussed through the group discussion.

  • Community Supporter-

He supports the idea of all participants. Usually, he doesn't come up with his own ideas.

  • Reliever-

The one who discuss with a broader perspective. He may take the issue into another serious level and thus relives all of any tension. Even though it is good, It is always advised not to go far away from the topic.

  • Energy Spreader-

He encourages other participants with positive energy in order to explore new ideas during the process.

  • Bridge creator-

He acts as a bridge between different opinions by giving solutions in different ways of compromise and thus creating harmony throughout the process.

  • Summary Maker-

At last, in the concluding part, one summarizes the GD with all the important points discussed throughout. It usually comes to a mutual understanding if the GD is conducted across two teams.
