  • These are those institutes, granted permission to autonomously award degrees
  • These institutes shall set their own curriculum, syllabus and conduct the examinations
  • Institutes conduct exams itself and are in accordance with what is being taught during the semester
  • A relative grading system is followed where the highest marks obtained by a student decides the marks of the others in that class
  • The university which is parent shall award the degree to the students evaluated, recommended by autonomous colleges
  • These institutes can also set their own curriculum, syllabus and conducts examinations
  • An institute will conduct the exams and are in accordance with what is being taught during the whole semester
  • There is a system of relative grading, followed when a student obtains highest marks. This will decide the marks of the others in the class
Features of Non-Autonomous institutes for Career in Engineering:
  • Parent university awards degrees and do not any independence of academics as well. There are no degrees granted by these affiliated colleges
  • The affiliating university awards degrees although the name of the college may be mentioned in the degree itself
  • These institutes follow the syllabus, curriculum prescribed by the universities from which they are affiliated
  • University conducts the examinations in some other college and is in accordance with the prescribed syllabus of the university
  • Mostly, these institutes follow the traditional percentage system
  • There are some popular Non-Autonomous Institutes and they are: JSS Academy of Technical Education, Atmiya Institute of Technology & Science etc

Here are some major points highlighted regarding the difference between autonomous and non-autonomous colleges for making a Career in Engineering:

  • By keeping the needs of industry in mind autonomous colleges have been provided flexibility to design their own curriculum. A college is given autonomy to meet the industry requirements. Graduates are produced as per these needs only
  • VTU issues degrees certificates for students passing out both autonomous and non-autonomous institutions
  • There will be a name of an institution on the degree certificated os the students
