  • Based on Various Courses Offered

The varied course structure of the Institute and University is the only primary difference between the two. A University offers courses for different undergraduate and graduate programmes targeted in providing the highest level of education for specialized and high ranking courses at the tertiary level.

While an institute focuses on providing knowledge in a specific skill or domain which will help the learners to execute a task in an effective manner. The courses offered by the institutions are commonly the certification courses or diploma courses at the highest level.

Institutes majorly focus on providing specialization in different trades and domains. Most of the Institutes offer intuitive training and development sessions in various study areas like arts, science, agriculture, fashion, or technology among other fields.

For instance, Technology related institutes will provide training and courses in technology-related fields only which means they impart education in specific technologies only. This is the reason why the institutes have their names ending with the area of specialization.

On the other hand, Universities are specialized in providing a large variety of which covers almost every sector in the industry. A university structure is divided into a number of campuses or departments specialized in offering specific courses. For example, Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School work under the management of the University of Harvard.

  • Based on Autonomy

Universities are large-scaled learning institutions which work as independent organizations who have the power to lay down their own education system, their own management, and own set of working rules. In a few words, it can be stated that University is self-governed provision through a legally constituted university council.

While Institutes don't have autonomous power to lay down their own management and decision-making system. Institutes run and work under the ministry of education of government who indirectly controls the activities of the institutes through the board of directors. However, the big institutions exercise a significant level of powers.

  • Based on Government Funding

Both the learning centers, Institute, and University receive funding from the government to run their education system in the best possible manner. In comparison to Institutions, Universities get a major part of funds due to the nature of the activities and responsibilities they hold.

Additionally, a university gets its source funds from their students who pay them for tuition fees and in form of other charges that help them in running an educational organization.

On the other hand, Institutes do not receive large amounts of funds from the government as they handle simplified tasks which do not require large machines and other resource invests. However, institutes also charge their students in form of tuition fees to run the school administration.

  • Based on Size and Population

Generally, universities are spread in a large campus area, having large buildings that are used to run house administration and the management of the organization. Apart from this, they also cover lecture rooms, student hostels, recreational facilities, libraries, laboratories, and auditoriums to entertain other vocational and curriculum activities.

University is not just oversized but they also provide a large number of teaching professionals(for technical and non-technical work) among a huge number of students. Like some big universities impart education to more than thirty thousand students at any given time.

Since there is such a high count of students, the university set lecturers, non-teaching staff accordingly which is very large and requires large structures and facilities to accommodate. While on the other side, Institutes cover a large but small number of buildings and field areas.

The different facilities offered are also limited in accordance with the low number of students. Institutes have extra spaces where they can conduct practical activities, training sessions rather than lecture halls and classes.

  • Based on Professional Qualification

Teaching standards at a University are high compared to a college. Professors and Lecturers imparting educational classes to university students should have specific professional qualifications in their teaching field.

This is the fact why most of the instructors at the university level are professors and doctors. The same applies in the case of intuition. But the degree of professional qualification required to be an instructor at Institute is comparatively low.

Professional qualification is still required to be an instructor at an institution but the level of qualification required is not that high as people with masters training can supervise learners at this level.
