Indian Army: Difference Between Grade Pay and Basic Pay

➥ Indian Army Basic Pay: The basic pay is the income of Indian army personnel based on his/her designation. It generally equals 35%-50% of the total salary. The total salary includes additional benefits like bonuses, allowances, and deductions and in basic pay, all of these additional benefits and allowances are excluded. The Indian Army's basic pay is a fixed amount offered according to their ranks and designations.

➥ Indian Army Grade Pay: The grade pay of Indian army personnel is based on their class, category, and pay band. In the Indian Army, it is calculated on the basis of the norms of the 7th Pay Commission applied on the post of the personnel.

Indian Army Salary 2024: Rankwise

Please note that you cannot directly apply for a certain rank in the Indian Army. To enter into some ranks, the candidate has to go through some training and selection procedure while some ranks can be only achieved after getting promoted. The lowest rank in the Indian Army is Sepoy (also known as Sipahi) and the highest one is General.

Indian Army offers lucrative salaries and numerous additional benefits to their personnel. After the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission, the salaries and pay matrix of the Indian Army has become much easier to understand. List of Indian Army Ranks:

1. Non-Commissioned Ranks

➜ Sepoy (Sipahi or Rifleman): This is the first and initial rank in the Indian Army. Aspirants who want to serve the nation can join the Indian Army on this post. Any 10th-passed candidate who lies in the age bracket of 17 years to 21 years can apply for this post in the army. It is a level 3 rank but it still offers a quite handsome salary of Rs 21,7000.

➜ Lance Naik: Sepoys are later upgraded to the post of Lance Naik, however, there is not much distinction between these two ranks but still, it is a level-up for young personnel. Please note that both of these ranks have the same pay scale but the grade pay of the two varies by just INR 200 i.e INR 2200 for a Lance Naik and INR 2000 for Sepoy.

➜ Naik: The Naik is a level 4 rank and it is a higher post from the Sepoy and Lance Naik. The Lance Naik is promoted to the rank of Naik. The grade pay of this Rank is INR 2400 and the total income per month is INR 25,500.

➜ Havaldar: Anyone can directly apply for the post of Havaldar as it is the 4th and the last rank of non-commissioned officers. The post of Army Havaldar is a well-paid post as compared to the Police Havaldar. The Indian Army Hawaldar is paid a monthly income of INR 29,200.

2. Junior Commissioned Ranks

➜ Naib Subedar: The Naib Subedar is the level 6th rank in the Indian Army which comes after the Hawaldar post. The Naib Subedar comes under the Junior Commissioned Officers. A Naib Subedar gets a monthly salary of INR 35,400 under the level 6 pay scale.

➜ Subedar: Subedar is one of the most highly respected posts in the Indian army. An officer becomes highly experienced once he reaches this post. It is one of the most respectable posts. It comes under the Level 7 Payscale and the officer at this post takes home a monthly salary of Rs 44,900. Please note that majority of soldiers who start serving the nation initially as sepoys usually end up retiring at this post.

➜ Subedar Major: Subedar Major is also known as Risaldar Major. It is the highest post for Junior-commissioned officers as it comes under the Level 8 of the pay scale. The post does not offer any allowances. A Subedar Major earns a monthly salary of INR 47,600.

3. Commissioned Officers

The army officers selected from the Indian Military Defense academies are paid higher salaries and they are also called commissioned officers. They are also posted at higher ranks in the Indian Army.

➜ Lieutenant: The post of Lieutenant is the initial post of an officer who is a fresher and just got recruited from the defense academy. The candidates who are serving as JCO/OR can apply for this rank. To apply for this post, the candidate must have completed their 12th or graduation. The Lieutenant comes under the pay scale of Level 10 and gets paid INR 56,100 as a monthly salary.

➜ Captain: It is the second rank of the commissioned officers. An officer serving as a Lieutenant for 2 or more years is eligible to apply for the post of Captain. The pay scale of the Captain comes under level 10B in the pay scale of Indian Army and the officer gets a monthly pay of Rs 61,300.

➜ Major: An officer is promoted to a Major once he completes 6 or more years in the post of Captain in the Indian Army. The rank of a Major comes under the Level 11 of the Indian army payscale and gets a monthly salary of Rs 69,400.

➜ Lieutenant Colonel: An officer who has completed serving as a Major for 13 years in the Indian Army gets promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. This army rank comes under level 12 of the payscale and gets a salary of INR 1,12,000 per month.

➜ Colonel: Colonel is the superior rank to the Lieutenant Colonel and to get a promotion to Colonel, the officer must exhibit certain qualities and prerequisites. The monthly salary of a Colonel in the Indian Army is INR 1,30,600.

➜ Brigadier: The Brigadier is one of the most respectable ranks in the Indian army and army personnel is awarded this rank after a long period of service in the Indian Army. This rank comes under the 13 A level of the pay scale. The salary offered to army personnel of this rank is INR 1,39,000.

➜ Major General: The army personnel becomes eligible to be promoted to the post of Major General once he/she completes his 32 years in the Indian army. This post lies under level 13 of the Indian Army payscale. The monthly income of the Major General in the Indian Army is Rs 1,44,200

➜ Lieutenant General: Lieutenant General is one of the highest posts in the Indian army awarded to an officer after numerous years of serving the nation with utmost dedication. The rank comes under level 15 of the payscale however there is no specific grade pay offered to the LG. Every year the Lieutenant General gets a pay raise of 3 percent of the salary. The average salary offered for this post is INR 1,82,500 or more.

➜ General: General is the highest rank in the Indian Army and it is a level 18 rank in the pay matrix. The monthly salary for the post of General is INR 2,50,000 without allowance.

NDA: Salary During Training Period
